Stations as Places
Railway stations are gateways to their local communities, and they are one of today's most significant meeting points for local people. Community Rail helps local people feel proud of their railway stations by facilitating community projects there. At Oxfordshire Community Rail Partnership (OxCRP) we want to make sure that people are able to get involved at their local railway stations, for instance by gardening, installing artworks that are produced by or are meaningful to local people, providing a book swap, or putting up local history boards so that visitors can orient themselves in the local area.

We work with existing station adopters or friends groups to support their ideas, and if your local station doesn't have a volunteer group to give it some local personality, drop us a line or fill out our online form to get in touch. We will point you in the right direction to put your ideas into practice.

We also do direct work to help put railway stations at the heart of their communities, and as key hubs in an integrated, sustainable transport system. Details of the first projects we have undertaken to turn stations into places are given below. We'll be adding more over time, so check back in regularly.

Station access maps
Our ongoing project to produce access maps focussed on our railway stations is helping people better understand what's around their railway stations, and the sustainable access opportunities to and from them. The maps are available to download from this website.

Moving Murals
Moving Murals is an exhibition celebrating young people’s creativity and connection to their communities. Through five workshops in Banbury and Oxford, 64 young people explored themes of place, identity, and local pride. Through collage, lino printing, and sign writing the participants reflected on what their local area means to them, celebrating the people, landmarks and journeys they shape their lives. Their work brings colour and community spirit to this shared space. You can explore the collection on Platform 1 & 2 at Oxford Parkway Station, or download our exhibition booklet which showcases the stories, themes, and individual art pieces produced throughout our community workshops.
